The condition of Sri Lanka’s economy has become dilapidated due to not being trapped in the web of debt and the circumstances arising out of Kovid-19. While everyday things are getting costlier, power cuts and fuel shortage have broken the back of the common man. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s Department of Educational Publications Commissioner General P.N. Ilaperuma has said that the printing of school textbooks is getting delayed due to paucity of paper and other related items. This information has been given in the report of Daily Mirror.
‘Very bad effect on the printing of books’
Ilaperuma told the Daily Mirror that due to the current fuel crisis in the country, the distribution of text books to schools is also getting delayed. In the days before the Covid-19 pandemic, there was no concern about the printing of textbooks. The power cuts in the country have affected the printing of books very badly. According to the report, he said, ‘Many sections of the State Printing Corporation and private printers have been closed due to the Kovid epidemic. Hence, there were delays in the completion of the projects. However, 45 percent of the school text books have been printed in the State Printing Corporation.
3.8 crore books to be distributed among children
About 38 million text books are to be distributed among school children in Sri Lanka. He said that this year 3.25 crore text books would be printed. The government has spent Rs 233.8 crore on the printing of text books, including those given to children. A total of 3.48 crore (91.8%) text books were distributed to provincial bookstores and directly to several schools. 3.16 crore (97 per cent) text books are to be printed. However, the publishing department has to print the remaining text books before the start of the next school term. (IANS)
