It is easy to reach the public through social media, but it can also be used for corruption, it has come to the fore from Maharashtra, because the country’s largest municipal corporation BMC has about 34 accounts on Twitter. Surprisingly, most of these accounts are not even verified. There are allegations that it costs Rs 2 crore per year to operate these Twitter handles, after which the BMC is being accused of misappropriating government money, which are also relevant. Similarly, Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar had also talked about spending Rs 6 crore per month on his Twitter account a few days ago. However, that decision was later withdrawn.
BMC is considered to be the richest municipal corporation in the country. The existence of Shiv Sena remains due to this BMC even today, but the BMC has become a topic of discussion due to the BMC’s mayor’s bigoted statements and corruption. At the same time, according to a disclosure, Rs 2 crore is spent annually for 34 Twitter accounts of BMC, after which BMC is under question. According to reports, BMC had awarded a contract worth Rs 5.8 crore to S2 Infotech International Limited to operate its Twitter accounts in 2019 without issuing tenders.
BMC had given this contract to the company till July 2022. Interestingly, there are 34 Twitter accounts including the main Twitter account of BMC @mybmc. These 34 accounts also include the accounts of 24 wards and other departments. However, on February 12, there was a report that out of these 34 accounts, 12 had become inactive due to technical reasons, which also raises some other questions that where is the money spent for these inactive accounts going?
