New Delhi, Dec 21 (PTI) The Election Law (Amendment) Bill, 2021 was passed in Parliament on Tuesday amid heavy protests by the opposition members. The bill proposes to link voter ID card and list with Aadhar card to prevent duplication and bogus voting in electoral rolls. The bill was passed by voice vote after discussion in Rajya Sabha amid heavy protests by opposition members. Lok Sabha has already passed it.
Opposition members described the bill as a violation of the fundamental rights and the right to privacy given by the Constitution. Through this bill, it has been said to amend the Representation of the People Act, 1950 and the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Responding to the brief discussion on the bill, Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the government proposed to amend the Election Act to ensure that no person can register in more than one constituency and to prevent bogus voting. Because there is only one cut-off date for registration on January 1 and registration of new voters takes place in it. He said that now there will be four dates for registration which will be January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1. “We want the electoral roll to be good. Everyone wants that. Therefore, linking the Aadhar card with the electoral roll.” After the minister’s reply, the House approved the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021 by voice vote. Earlier, opposition members expressed apprehension that the provisions of this bill would be misused and said that it would affect a large section of the electorate, especially the deprived section of the society.
