In 1860, Harichand Thakur started the Matua movement from this area. His followers are still in large numbers in Bangladesh and West Bengal of India. Harichand Thakur is worshiped like God by this community and his followers believe that he had come to liberate the backward in the world. This is where PM Modi will be welcomed by the community and it is expected that he can address the Matua community here.
