ED calls Mehbooba in money laundering case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti in connection with a money laundering case.

 The Mufti has been asked to appear before the agency on 15 March. Sources said the case relates to a case of “financial embezzlement” in which the Mufti’s role has been alleged to have surfaced and a separate case has been registered by another agency. 

ED officials did not divulge details of the case or the investigation, claiming it could jeopardize the investigation. With the Mufti summoned, he will be placed under scrutiny by a central agency over the last few months to another prominent leader of the PDP.

 The NIA arrested PDP youth leader Wahid Para in November last year just before the DDC elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Deputy Superintendent of Police Davinder Singh, who was suspended for investigation, allegedly struck a deal with the terrorist organization Hizb-ul-Mujahideen. Para, who went to win elections from his constituency in Pulwama, was recently released on bail. The NIA had alleged that Para had paid Hizb-ul-Mujahideen Rs 10 lakh to ensure his support before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Mercury denied these allegations.
