India is becoming a big player in global arms exports under Modi’s rule, responding to China in the same way

India’s strength in the defense sector is continuously increasing under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While the Modi government is promoting ‘Make in India’ in the defense sector, it is also trying to make India a champion in global arms exports. The Modi government is getting great success in this direction. The effect of Prime Minister Modi’s policies is that India has started challenging China on seeing it. Today India is also responding to China in the same manner. Recently India has sold BrahMos missiles to the Philippines.

Similarly, India has also signed a defense agreement with Vietnam worth $ 100 million i.e. 750 crores, in which 12 high-speed guard boats made in India will be given to Vietnam. Apart from these, 42 more countries are buying arms from India. Many of these countries are those who are troubled by China and now India is helping them by giving weapons. Significantly, in the last two decades, China has signed several defense agreements with countries like Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan and sold modern weapons to these countries.

In the year 2015-2016, India sold arms worth Rs 2,000 crore to other countries. In 2020-2021, this figure increased from 2 thousand crores to about 6 thousand 300 crores. According to a recent report, India has seen a growth of 228 percent in the last few years in this sector, which is unprecedented. Today, India’s share in global arms exports is only 0.2 percent. Whereas in the year 2015 this share was 0.1 percent. That is, it took 68 years for India after independence to get 0.1 percent share.

India is reducing its dependence on other countries for weapons and is becoming a big player in the field of defense by becoming self-reliant. Now dangerous and modern weapons are being developed in India too. Arms purchases from abroad have fallen by 33 percent. Meanwhile, the Modi government has started reviewing import deals under the global category. The Defense Ministry has indicated that defense equipment will be procured from abroad only in case of urgent or emergency.
The Indian Army is also giving priority to the purchase of defense equipment manufactured in the country.

Recently, Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane handed over the first set of next generation Armored Engineer Reconnaissance Vehicle and other equipment to the Corps of Engineers. According to an army official, the Indian Army is going to induct seven lakh fully indigenous ‘Proficient’ anti-personal mines, which have a powerful combination of RDX.
