Gita Gopinath to be IMF First Deputy MD: Indian-origin veteran economist Gita Gopinath has once again raised India’s value at the international level. He has been given the number-2 chair in the IMF ie International Monetary Fund. She is currently the first woman Chief Economist of the IMF. Her term was due to end in January and was to return as a professor at Harvard University. But before that his name was announced for the IMF’s First Deputy Managing Director. She will replace Geoffrey Okamoto.
Indian-American Gita Gopinath was born on 8 December 1971 in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. Although his parents were originally from Kerala and lived in Kannur. He did his early education from Nirmala Convent School in Mysore, Karnataka. Geeta was not very good in studies in her childhood. Her father Gopinath had told in an interview given to The Week that till the seventh grade, only 45 percent of Geeta’s marks were available, but after that she continued to improve in studies.
Later, Geeta’s numbers started coming up to 90 percent. After schooling, Geeta studied science from Maharaja PU College in Mysore. The marks were very good and she could have gone for engineering or medicine, but she had to study economics. He took admission in Lady Shri Ram College, University of Delhi and did BA Honors in Economics. Then he did his MA in Economics from Delhi School of Economics. After this she went to Washington and did her PhD from Princeton University there in 1996-2001.
