Indian Coast Guard jawans on Wednesday carried out rescue and relief operations after the cyclone Yass in Odisha. (PTI) As Cyclone Yas hit northern Odisha at around 10.30 am on Wednesday, strong winds and heavy tides devastated many coastal cities and villages on both sides of the Odisha-West Bengal border, flooding the low-lying areas. Gaya and trees were uprooted, and claimed to have killed at least three people – two in Odisha and one in West Bengal. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday conducted an aerial survey to assess the extent of damage in the state. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclonic storm weakened under a deep pressure over southern Jharkhand and adjoining Odisha. IMD said that it is expected to move northwestward and weaken gradually later today.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutarares said that the world body is ready to assist the country in relief efforts if it needs help. Spokesman Stephen Dujarik said, “From South Asia, which is currently being affected by tropical cyclone Yass, our humanitarian colleagues told us that we have activated cyclone preparedness measures and food and other commodities stocks.” “The storm reached the Indian state of Odisha yesterday, with millions of people evacuated by the government before the storm. UN agencies and our partners in India are ready to support the response efforts to the request of state officials. ” .
