Fire at LPS Institute of Cardiology in Kanpur, over 100 patients evacuated

The intensive care unit of the LPs Institute of Cardiology in Kanpur took a fire Sunday morning, which eventually spread to other parts of the hospital building. More than 100 patients were admitted to the emergency ward of the first floor of the hospital, considered to be the largest cardiology hospital in the region, sources said. The fire department personnel pulled out the patients and ensured that no patient or hospital staff was behind. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. The death of two elders has been confirmed, but police insisted the deaths were not related to the fire. “We have not had any casualties due to the fire and all have been evacuated,” Kanpur Police Commissioner Asim Arun told the Indian Express. One of the elderly had already died on fire and his body was inside the building. Another senior citizen was evacuated but died out of his illness. These two deaths are not related to fire. “According to hospital staff, Arun said, when the fire broke out, all the 149 beds in the hospital were full. The evacuated patients have been shifted to the Hospital in Kanpur. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken cognizance of the incident and directed the authorities to provide immediate care to all the vacant patients. According to a statement issued by his office, he sought a report from the district administration and directed that a high-level team comprising princple secretary (medical education), Kanpur police commissioner, and DG Fire visit the site today. Guidelines have also been issued to review the safety preparedness of hospitals in case of fire.
