An official from Northeast India said on Saturday that authorities in Myanmar have asked India to return several police officers who sought asylum to avoid seizing power in the South-East Asian country last month. The most senior officer in Champai, a district in the Indian state of Mizoram, told Reuters that he had received a letter from his counterpart in Myanmar’s Falam district requesting the return of eight police to maintain friendly relations. Deputy Commissioner Maria Citi Juali told Reuters on Saturday that she is “waiting for direction” from India’s Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi.
Although there have been examples on the social media of the police to join the civil disobedience movement and protest against Junata, this is the first case of the police fleeing Myanmar. In the letter, a copy of which was reviewed by Reuters, Myanmar officials said they had information about eight police personnel who had crossed into India
. The letter lists details for four cops between the ages of 22 and 25, including a female officer. “To maintain friendly relations between the two neighboring countries, I humbly request you to detain eight Myanmar police personnel who arrived in Indian territories and handed over to Myanmar,” the letter said. India’s federal home ministry and the foreign ministry did not immediately respond to Reuters’ questions. .
