Let us know why Nandi is seated in front of the idol of Lord Shiva, the story behind it. According to the legend of Shiv Purana, seeing the end of the dynasty due to Shilad Muni becoming celibate, his ancestors expressed concern. Due to being busy in Muni Yoga and Tapas etc., he did not want to enter the Grihastha Ashram. Shilad Muni did penance to please Indra Dev for wishing for a child and asked him for the boon of a son who would be free from the bondage of birth and death. Indra Dev expressed his incompetence in this but advised him to please Lord Shiva.

According to the orders of Indradev, Shilad Muni did severe penance of Lord Shankar. Pleased with his penance, Lord Shiva himself granted him a boon to appear as the son of Shilad. Shilad Muni received a son. After some time after the boon of Lord Shankar, a child appeared from the earth while plowing the plow. Shilad Muni considered him a boon of Shiva and named him Nandi. – As Nandi grew up, Lord Shankar sent two sages named Mitra and Varun to the ashram of Shilad Muni who predicted Nandi’s short life. When Nandi came to know about this, he decided to do severe penance of Lord Bholenath to win death and went to the forest and meditated on Shiva.

Shiva gave a boon to Nandi – Lord Shankar was pleased with Nandi’s penance and by Shankar’s boon, Nandi was freed from death, fear etc. – Lord Shankar with the consent of Mother Parvati, as the lord of all the Ganas and in front of the Vedas Nandi was anointed. – In this way Nandi turned into Nandishwar. After some time Nandi and Marut’s daughter Suyasha got married. The boon given to sit in front of him in the temple – Lord Shankar gave a boon to Nandi that wherever Nandi resides, Shiva will also reside at the same place. – This is the reason why Nandi is established in every Shiva temple.
