In the fifth phase of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, 19.76 lakh metric tonnes of food grains have been distributed so far.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, even in the times of Corona epidemic, the weaker sections of the society are getting basic facilities continuously. Women, poor senior citizens and farmers are getting free food grains and cash assistance through Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package. Under the fifth phase of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY), 19.76 lakh metric tonnes of food grains have been distributed free of cost to about 80 crore eligible beneficiaries.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, led by Prime Minister Modi, announced the Prime Minister’s Garib Kalyan Package on March 26, 2020, to save 80 crore poor people from the effects of the lockdown. As a part of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package, the government announced free food grains and cash payments to women, poor senior citizens, farmers. The speedy implementation of this package is being continuously monitored by the Central and State Governments.

Under the PM Garib Kalyan Dhan Yojana, help will be given to farmers, MNREGA, poor widows, poor pensioners and disabled, and women holding Jan Dhan account, women beneficiaries of Ujjwala scheme, women of self-service groups and workers of organized sector, construction workers. has been Under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, every poor person is getting 5 kg of additional wheat and rice, that is, a total of 10 kg of wheat or rice. Along with this, they will also get 1 kg of pulses, in which the pulses of the people’s choice are given according to the region.

Additional food grains are given on the basis of 5 kg per person per month, which they get in addition to their regular monthly ration. The objective is to ensure that no poor, weak or needy beneficiary or his family should suffer due to shortage of food grains during the economic crisis caused by the pandemic. Earlier during 2020-21 PM-GKAY scheme was announced for only three months April, May and June 2020 (Phase I).

In April 2021, due to the continuation of the Corona crisis in 2021-22, the government again extended it for five months from May and June 2021 (3rd phase) and again from July to November 2021 (fourth phase). After this, keeping in mind the situation of Corona in November 2021, the Modi government decided to continue the distribution of free food grains from December 2021 to March 2022 (fifth phase). Under this scheme (from 1st to 5th phase) about 759 lakh metric tonnes of food grains have been given free of cost to the states for 80 crore beneficiaries so far.
